The Hag: 'The Bottle Let Me Down'

Man, it just don't get no better than this! About 9 hours from now, now ... Haggard, Willie, Ray Price, in OKC!

--ER

"The Bottle Let Me Down"
by Merle Haggard

D
Each night I leave the barroom when it's over
A7
Not feeling any pain at closing time
A7
But tonight you memory found me much too sober
D
Couldn't drink enough to keep you off my mind

CHORUS:
D
Tonight the bottle let down
A7
and let you memory come around
A7
The one true friend I thought I'd found
D
Tonight the bottle let down

I've always had a bottle I could turn to
And lately I've been turning everyday
But the wine don't take effect the way it used to
And I'm hurting in an old familiar way

CHORUS

Tonight the bottle let down

Comments:
Wow, that voice takes me straight back to eastern Oklahoma.

My favorite Merle Haggard song, though, has to be, "Mama Tried."

The first thing I remember knowing,
Was a lonesome whistle blowing,
And a young un's dream of growing up to ride;
On a freight train leaving town,
Not knowing where I'm bound,
No-one could change my mind but Mama tried.

One and only rebel child,
From a family, meek and mild:
My Mama seemed to know what lay in store.
Despite all my Sunday learning,
Towards the bad, I kept on turning.
'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.
No-one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.
That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.

Instrumental break.

Dear old Daddy, rest his soul,
Left my Mom a heavy load;
She tried so very hard to fill his shoes.
Working hours without rest,
Wanted me to have the best.
She tried to raise me right but I refused.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.
No-one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.
That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.

In California when I was missing Paw Paw and my friends.

I was drinking cold beer and singing with headphones. "I think I will sit here and drink"

Made the dogs next door howl. Yep it was that bad.

I am so jelous. Have one for me

Man, I need to scoot a boot and rub belt buckles with somebody.

Dr. ER says that when I get to Colorado, she'll actually hit the sawdust and hardwood with me. I think she's gonna insist we takek dance lessons! Just to two-step!

Might not be a bad idee, actually, since it's been 10 years now since I was on a dang dance floor!

Stupid hurricane! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Oookay, I agree hurricanes are stupid, and destructive, too. But did I miss something else?

Ok, I am lost too. Have you already been hitting the bottle for practice. I sure wish I could be there to boot scoot with you. It has been at least 10 yrs for me too.

But it is like riding a bike. I bet it would come back to us. :-)

I think the boy was pissed because the outer bands of the Tropical Storm Erin that flooded Houston today were beginning to spit on him about the time he wrote the entry. The good ole boys singing tonight are doing it in an outside "bowl". Guess he thought he would get wet or they would cancel. Don't think it is doing anything but misting every once in a while. I can hear the stock cars running outside my window, so it can't be too wet. He should be fine.

I was in Bayfield, Wisconsin this summer however, when Willie didn't show up on the correct day for a gig there, so who knows?

Right you are, DrLobo. It rained soem on us, but not enough to matter.

GREAT time. Ray Price's performance was tightest. Haggard totally muffed a verse of "Pancho & Lefty." Willie was Willie -- and his obligatory "liberal" "peace" song went over like a dead cat, not surprisingly, considering it was an Oklahoma crowd. Holy crap: When Merle was singing "Okie" I thought the whole crowd was gonna just levitate and take OFF at the line "like the hippies out in San Francisco do."

I see you survived all that wild living with those decadent entertainers. Did Willie share a doobie with the crowd? Was Ray Price sober (apparently, if his set was the tightest of the bunch). As for Merle muffing a verse - I've been to shows where bands "dum-dum-da-da"'d through whole phrases because they forgot their own lyrics. I always laugh when that happens. I figure if Jimi Hendrix can miss an entire verse of "Like a Rolling Stone" at the biggest concert of his career (Monterrey Pop Festival) and the Grateful Dead can routinely miss verses on various songs (most notoriously on their most well known song, "Truckin'"), there's no reason why others can't do the same.

Say ER, good thing you went on Friday night. Tropical Storm Erin did the impossible last night. The damn thing regenerated over Oklahoma like we were the damn Gulf of Mexico or somthing. Would you believe it formed an "Eye" with wall wind speeds of 70 mph. That's not natural. Tell Dr. ER she needs to check out the infrared satelite stuff or the radar. We are suppose to do tornadoes and not generate near hurricanes over land! We might ought to drain some of our lakes if we are attracting that kind of thing with them.
