It ... is ... alive!
Call it ER-enstein's monster post!
Bits of theology and philosophy and science and scientism and faith and doubt and skepticism and religion -- all cobbled together into a stumbling creature staggering under its own weight!
Come on. Help me get it to 400! And then I'll let it die. :-)

Dear posters,
Do not stoke ER's ego. He doesn't need it.
:-)
Eh, go ahead. He probably DOES need it.

Been there, done that, ER. Just the other day. Wow, I say, Wow.
It hurt. A. Lot.
But I kept on readin', didn't I?
Now there are about 10 hours I'll never get back. :-)

"Scientism" is a word that sort of looses me automatically. I have a sort of "Godwin's Law" when it comes to the word.
Once the word "sciencism" is invoked, the conversation has become the kind of conversation that can only end in a gunshot.

???
I mean "scientism" to mean the laying of scientific principles and approaches over all areas of life: business, ethics, etc. I only started using it a few weeks ago after reading a section on 1930s-era scientism in a book of economic-business history. So, if others are out there in the wild using it right now, it's really, ahem, memetic!
:-)
On postmodernism; I get acused of that occasionally, and I don't even know for sure what the hell it means.

I guarantee you that the person doing the accusing doesn't either.

This is what I mean by scientism, from Wiki:
This is what I mean, from Wiki:
The term scientism can be used as a neutral term to describe the view that natural science has authority over all other interpretations of life, such as philosophical, religious, mythical, spiritual, or humanistic explanations, and over other fields of inquiry, such as the social sciences. It also can imply a criticism of a perceived misapplication or misuse of the authority of science in either of two directions:
The term is often used as a pejorative[1][2] to indicate the improper usage of science or scientific claims.[3] In this sense, the charge of scientism often is used as a counter-argument to appeals to scientific authority in contexts where science might not apply,[4] such as when the topic is perceived to be beyond the scope of scientific inquiry.
The term is also used to pejoratively refer to "the belief that the methods of natural science, or the categories and things recognized in natural science, form the only proper elements in any philosophical or other inquiry,"[2] with a concomitant "elimination of the psychological dimensions of experience".[5][6] It thus expresses a position critical of (at least the more extreme expressions of) positivism.[7][8]

Hmmm...at my college, "equine science" meant you had a really good excuse for coming to class smelling like shit.
"Please do not put boots on walls."
Signs at the back of classrooms in Ag Hall at Oklahoma State, in the 1980s, maybe still.
Along with: "Please do not spit tobacco in water fountains."
:-)
I quit boots after about my first week at OSU, because Bennett Hall was a mile from everywhere and all that walkin' on sidewalks and pavement wore me out in boots.
I did, I am chagrined to admit, occasionally expectorate Cope in a water fountain.

In college, I only wore boots to the Western bar. I had a permed mullet. Most of my buddies went to the "popular" bar, which played Tone Loc and Paula Abdul. Every now and then, they'd play some Hank Jr., and a girl friend and I would do some Western swing.
We didn't have an "ag" hall, so a lot of the ag science folks were in the science building. Some of the more uptight people were sending out petitions to make students not wear boots in the building -- mainly because said boots were usually coated with cow and/or hors shit -- but it didn't fly.

Re, " I had a permed mullet."
Holy sheeeeit, Cowboy. You win. Mine wadn't permed! And I didn't know it was called a mullet till it was gone. That's called an "honest" mullet. LOL

Hi ER,
I praise your effort - I am trying, but it is only me left at the moment.
Lee
PS
Billy responded again BTW at my place - I'll be happy just to get to 50 but I guess that is when the drug really kicks in.
