The 'war on ... the cross' in Iraq, courtesy of the Red-White-and-Blue

What the war in Iraq -- the allegedly "Christian" American nation's invasion and occupation of Iraq -- has wrought for Iraqi Christians.

I think I'll write George W. Bush and every psuedo-messianic warmongering imperialist Congressman a nice Christmas letter and thank them.

--ER

(CBS) From the time of Jesus, there have been Christians in what is now Iraq. The Christian community took root there after the Apostle Thomas headed east.

But now, after nearly 2,000 years, Iraqi Christians are being hunted, murdered and forced to flee -- persecuted on a biblical scale in Iraq's religious civil war.

You'd have to be mad to hold a Christian service in Iraq today, but if you must, then the vicar of Baghdad is your man. He's the Reverend Canon Andrew White, an Anglican chaplain who suffers from multiple sclerosis and from a fanatical determination to save the last Iraqi Christians from the purge.

White invited 60 Minutes cameras and correspondent Scott Pelley to an underground Baghdad church service for what's left of his congregation. White's parishioners are risking their lives to celebrate their faith.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The room is full of children, it’s full of women, but I don’t see the men. Where are they?" Pelley remarked.

"They are mainly killed. Some are kidnapped. Some are killed. In the last six months things have got particularly bad for the Christians. Here in this church, all of my leadership were originally taken and killed," White explained. "All dead. But we never got their bodies back. This is one of the problems. I regularly do funerals here but it's not easy to get the bodies."

Many Iraqi Christians' churches are destroyed or abandoned. The congregation is smuggled in and out of this secret sanctuary. Even letting 60 Minutes come to the service was a terrible risk. White is among the last Christian ministers here, a savior with crosses to bear. Larger than life, stricken with MS, and by his own reckoning, driven a little bit mad.

He was first sent to Baghdad by the Archbishop of Canterbury nine years ago, well before the Christian persecution.

"You were here during Saddam’s reign. And now after. Which was better? Which was worse?" Pelley asked.

"The situation now is clearly worse” than under Saddam, White replied.

"There’s no comparison between Iraq now and then," he told Pelley. "Things are the most difficult they have ever been for Christians. Probably ever in history. They’ve never known it like now."

"Wait a minute, Christians have been here for 2,000 years," Pelley remarked.

"Yes," White said.

...

Read it, view it and weep.

Comments:
"allegedly "Christian" American nation"?

Whatever happened to Seperation of Church and State, ER?

Don't you believe in the Constitution, man?

OK. So, I figured to get a haircut and beard trim on my way out of town, but the airheaded little gal who cut my hair since the very nice Persian lady who has cut it for years was off sick today was clueless about how to do a beard. So, I came back to the house to do it myself, and I figgered to check in onced more before hittin' the road.

All of that to say to Mr. KIA:

I'm not the one alleging that this nation is Christian. I never have. It's the very ones, for the most part, who shoved the war in Iraq down this country's throat, with lie after lie after lie after lie, who claim, against historical evidence and current events, that this is a Christian nation, and that the war in Iraq is a righteous undertaking.

Not me.

I know the subtleties of language are lost in blogdom, so, being a magnaminous and benevolent blog host, I will grant you, KIA, a pass for your incorrect interpretation of my complaint.

Here, let me spell it out for you: The fundamentalist-wingjobs are wrong about history and wrong about the righteousness of this war or ANY war.

And look at what the lie after lie after lie has done to the church in Iraq. God help them -- and God help all warmongering souls.

Toodles.

Well, I was just cleaning out from under my toenails with my pocketknife, and noticed that the light in the bedroom closet was out, so I went out to the garage and got the ladder and changed the bulb.

All that to say:

Ooooh, I see.

You were making an attempt to point out hypocrisy of some kind in the Bush Administration and the Congressmen and Senators who voted to go to War against Iraq.

Does your "Thank You" card list extend to the United Nations who issued no less than 17 Resolutions (ALL ignored by Hussein) demanding that the Hussein Regime disarm and cooperate over ten years prior to the U.S. Invasion?

Are they "allegedly Christian" too?

Or is it only the President and a few Republicans who have earned the tag of "messianic warmongering imperialist"?

Was this post inspired by your concern for the Christians in Iraq (most of whom would disagree with you about matters of faith, I would wager), or by your hatred for the President? (It's hard to tell, really...)

KIA, the point may have been lost upon you, either when you stabbed your toe with the penknife, or when you hit your head with the ladder when you tried to set it up, but it's real simple. Dodging responsibility for complicity in crimes against humanity in Iraq by dragging in nonsequiturs is an old dodge, proving nothing more than you need a new playbook.

Okay.

Maybe I'll just join in on the chorus of "Bush lied! War for Oil!, "so-called Christians"!"

Maybe then you will like me...

I smiled when I first read your blog. It is my cynical sense of humor.

Most of the Christian oppression in Iraq happened in the first six months of occupation and our government was acutely aware that it was happening. Their solution was to move them out. Since 2004 40% of all Iraqi refugees admitted to the U.S. have been Christians even though they comprised on 3% of the population.

Most of these Christians were Syriac (Assyrian or Thomasian)) Christians. Oklahoma took a large chunk of these. The Catholics, Anglicans, and Protestant Denominations have for the most part gotten their Iraqi members out as well.

This isn't the first time Iraqi Syriac Christians have been persecuted. See the Assyrian Genocide by the Ottoman Turk Empire of which Iraq was a part.

Israel is busy relocating the 4000 year old community of Jews from Iraq to Israel.

Canada has been instrumental in the saving of the Mandean Gnostic Christian community that was harassed like for the last 2000 years by everybody. They were known as the Marsh Arabs and lived in the marshes of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Saddam killed or exile most of them, but this lates wars has finished the job. They believed they were started by disciples of John The Baptist.

The Zoroasterist who trace back 5000 years in Iraqi and Persia have fled to India and the West.
Almost no-one of that group is left in Iraq it is reported.

And as recently as six months ago the massive truck bombings and assassinations against the Yazdanism religion in the NW part of Iraq show that they are being eradicated. They however refuse to leave, because they have no where to leave to. Being that they are direct descendants of Adam and the Garden of Eden is their home land and that they are the only real Human Beings, to where could they flee.

There are probably others, Maybe the Nestorians?

So my Nation for which I am responsible, has helped undo up to 5000 years of religious history by letting leash the dogs of war. When it is all over with there will be two or three Neo-Iraqi nations and they will all be totally muslim. All other Iraqi religions will have been purged or cleansed.

But hey, why is this news? It has been in the papers and on the tube all along. At least that's what I've been reading and hearing.

Because now it's Bush's fault!

KIA - who pushed us in to a war of choice in Iraq? Who pushed a war on the cheap, with no planning for the inevitable occupation? Who entered in to war in the Muslim world without knowing there were different sects of Islam that didn't like one another? Who is ultimately responsible for the actions of the military and Executive Branch of the United States, which we've been informed about ad nauseum?

Last time I checked, that would be the President of the United States, who happens to be George W. Bush. So, yeah, Bush does happen to bear the brunt of the responsibility. What about that is so difficult to grasp?

When it comes to the prosecution of a war, the buck stops on the President's desk. Fault? There is enough of that to go around. Responsibility, that belongs to Bush by virtue of the office he holds, and by the actions he took or didn't take. He was wrong in so many ways and now he has to pay a price for that.

I did not use the word "fault" because that is a child's word. "Responsibility" is the word I used, and drlobojo used as well, because that is the issue.

drlobojo was clear, I wasn't. Just wanted to make myself so.

Pay a price?

What price?

Do you think that the fact that you guys sit around and bitch about him constantly hurts the President?

When we were ramping up to this War, the Congress and Senate couldn't sign on fast enough, and they had the same Intelligence Reports that the President had.

Clinton said repeatedly that Hussein needed to be taken out, but he didn't have the balls to do anything about it.

"Fault is a child's word..."

Oh, yeah?

Well this is a child's conversation, among a bunch of spoiled children crying in their cribs because they can't have their way.

Pay a price... That's too funny!

Here are some examples of the President "paying a price"...

From the Politico.com...

"Dems back off on Iraq demands...

"Each day lately, Democrats inch closer to giving President Bush more money for the war in Iraq without any serious mandates for withdrawing U.S. troops..."

CNN.com...

"Bush vetoes war-funding bill with withdrawal timetable "

"I recognize that many Democrats saw this bill as an opportunity to make a political statement about their opposition to the war," Bush said. "They've sent their message, and now it is time to put politics behind us and support our troops with the funds they need."

From TheHill.com...

Bush blasts House for ‘wasting time’ on investigations

President Bush on Tuesday slammed Congress for not getting its work done and focusing too much on investigating his administration and repeatedly attempting to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq.

“We’re near the end of the year, and there really isn’t much to show for it,” Bush told reporters following a meeting with House GOP leaders.

He's really paying a price, alright...

He's getting everything he wants from the people that you guys sent up there to stop him...

And he will NEVER, EVER be impeached.

That's just a fact.

So, continue with your bitching, if it makes you feel better, but that's about all it will accomplish.

Just because the current "leadership" in Congress is spineless does not mean that their deeds are any more justifiable than the Presidents. Indeed, they were elected precisely because the American people are clamoring for this nightmare to end, and their failure to do so, or to stand up to the President in any substantive way, has put their poll numbers even lower than the President's.

He may never be impeached. That only means that our entire system is broken, not that what he has done is justified or justifiable. KIA, we may be bitching, and our bitching may be meaningless, but that, again, shows how broken our system is. It does matter, however, because silence is tacit consent and I for one do not consent to any of the criminal deeds done by the Bush Administration. If I do not speak up, who will? Who speaks for me but me?

Nobody but you, brother.

And I'd say that you have selected an excellent forum here on ER's Blog.

So... Speak out! I'm sure change is right around the corner...

Pay a price:For Mr. KIA (Killed In Action?)
Bush may never be impeached.
Bush may never go to jail.
But Bush can not have what he wanted most, respect, and a vaunted place in history.
Bush is not a lame duck, he is a dead duck, plucked and hung up to ripen.
Bush is now know as the worst President ever, by those who record such things, the Presidential Historians.
Bush will be remembered as the only unelected President America ever had.
Unlike Regan , Bush can not be redeemed. Nixon has been saved from the bottom of the list by GW.
Bush has opened the door to the Imperial Presidency and the Democrats are going to walk in and occupy a much stronger office that they left in 2000.
The Republican Party may not ever recover from his administration.
Bush's Presidential Library will be the biggest joke of all because he will be scared stiff to release anything in it because any such release will do nothing but revile and embarrass him. Not to mention that his Head of the Library, Karl Rove, will be the first such head to go to prison for multiple counts of perjury.
Oh yes and the political dynasty for his brother and nephews is gone gone gone, ain't going to happen.
Bush may very well be the last Republican President.
No he won't be impeached, that will give him too much sympathy.
Bush is fast becomeing the O.J. Simpson of American Politicians. He will have golfing partners and camp followers, but everybody will know what he did.
I hope he lives a long and public life.
And all the rants you care to make can not help the man one iota, it is a done deal and he done it himself.

Well, Legacy building has never seemed to be a very high priority to President Bush. (That's Clinton's bag.)

(You remember him, don't you? The only President since Andrew Johnson to be impeached?)

And if there was a "Kennedy Style" Political Dynasty in the works, then I, for one am glad that it has been de-railed. (We still have to fight off the Clinton Dynasty. We thank you for your help with that...)

NO-BODY deserves to be President simply because of their name.

If Karl Rove was prosecutable, he would already be in Prison. He may very well be the only man in America who is hated
WORSE by the Left than the President.

Last Republican President? Who are you guys going to replace him with?

Hillary? (You might try asking HER to release a few records...)

If that happens, then his place in History as "Worst President Ever" will certainly be short-lived... My guess is that it would last about 100 days after he leaves office.

And, let's get one other thing straight... I am not so self important as to believe that I have to save the President.

I am not here to help President Bush...

I'm here to annoy you losers.

And since you brought it up, let's address one other issue.

In 2000, Al Gore won 266 Electoral Votes.

President Bush won 271.

So that means that President Bush was elected, Al Gore was not.

In 2004, Bush got 286 Electoral Votes, and Kerry recieved 252.

Elected.

Twice.

And you know this.

So, either you do not understand how the system works, or you are perpetuating a lie.

We do not elect Presidents according to the Popular Vote. (This is a Representative Republic, not a Democracy.)

Stop trying to lie us into a War of Choice against the President.

It makes you look petty and desperate.

KIA said:
"I'm here to annoy you losers."
and then he said:
"It makes you look petty and desperate."

I'm always pleased when people define themselves correctly.

Sometimes I think the Internet is like our sidewalks were after President Regan cut the Mental Health Budgets and released several hundred thousand mental patients onto them.

Must be...

You guys are here...

Look up the term "Bush Derangement Syndrom"...

"Syndrome" I should have said...

If you guys ever learn to correctly define yourselves, then you won't need me anymore.

KIA said: "...then you won't need me anymore."

So being needed, having a feelings of worth are important. Tell me how do you feel about that?

We've gotten along way off from the Christians being killed in Iraq.
We are now down to the personal gratification/therapy of an unhappy person.

Say ER, are you stuck on the Ice somewhere along I-44? It is shit/slick here. Hope you get back intact.

Dr. Sanity has a wonderful piece from which you all might learn.

You can find it here:
http://drsanity.blogspot.com/2005/11/lets-discuss-bush-derangement-syndrome.html

In it, the Dr. says that "Bush becomes the "criminal mastermind", so devious, so evil, that everything he says is a "lie", everything he does is part of a vast global consipiracy. His family has intimate ties to Bin Laden and the Saudis; He is trying to enrich his oil business friends; He is trying to avenge the insult to his father by getting rid of Saddam; He plans world domination etc. etc. I could go on an on, but you get the point."

Sound familiar?

The Dr. goes on to say "What is most funny is that these psychologically naiive individuals simultaneously think of Bush as this "criminal mastermind"--a genius of evil; and also as a complete moron who isn't capable of uttering a sentence without making a hash of it; or that his brain is controlled by the equally evil Karl Rove."

I think that this Blog must have been his research material.

Another thing that stands out to me is that you guys seem to have a sense of complete and total hopelessness to go along with your raging BDS.

"the current "leadership" in Congress is spineless..."

"how broken our system is..."

"nobody speaks for me..."

I hate to break it to you guys, but none of us is the General Manager of the Universe, not even George W. Bush.

And there is no Presidential candidate running in '08 who is going to end the War in Iraq any time soon. (At least no electable candidate anyway...)

Not one.

On either side.

If you want Peace, then support the War.

Because the only way to get Peace is to Win the War.

So, logical people would say "Let's get busy, get it done, and get it over with as soon as possible!"instead of pointing fingers and yelling "It's all his fault! He did it!"and standing in the way of real progress toward lasting Peace (Which only ever comes after one side or the other has lost the War.

And since we are already engaged in the War, rational people would rather that their side win.

You guys really need help.

Unhappy people, Drlobojo. (And by the way, that's exactly where we started.)

Read my comment.

Nice try, Anonymous...

I'm not the unhappy one here...

I'm having a blast!

Tugboat my friend, is it lonely in the blog world you inhabit. I wasn't going to blow your cover, after all you do add spice to the proceedings, but dang it you just can't be reasonable.
FYI to ER: Tugboat and Know It All track back and are the same person.

(A) What does any of KIA's musing have to do with the death of Iraqi Christianity? Drlobojo's right, regardless of the baiting going on, we are a bit off the subject.

(B) I will assume that "Tugboat" is someone you both know, and have dealt with before.

Ha! I thought of Tuggy about 20 secionds before I got to your cover-blowing comment, DrLobojo. His "style" of thought does betray him! But, that gives the to his insistence that he's "not even close" to Daddio. They're twins in some ways.

Re, "I'm here to annoy you losers." Let's see: Ooodles of comments? Hit meter whirring? Someone to disagree with? You think you're annoying me? Are you nuts? Ha! Bring it on, brother.

Hoo hoo hee hee ha.

Trip from southeast of Dallas to the house was unventful until Norman, when everybody forgot how to drive at the same time. But I did have to kick my truck door open -- totally froze shut.

Quality of last night-this morning's party: I'm fixin' to heat up some menudo. And I am waaaaay toooo old for that kind of partyin'. Oof.

Geoffrey ... Tug's blog:

http://truckerphilosophy.blogspot.com/

I really have no hard feelings toward Tugster. We just wore out each welcome -- oh, and we met online before the scales fell from my eyes, as it were regarding the president, and when I still considered myself a nonactive Southern Baptist, before I joined a local congregational-UCC church.

Here's an example of God's heeeeelarious sense of humor: I think of Tug almost every day. At work, we have a little three-bay dock, and there's not much of a turnaround space. Regular drivers can whip in and out easily, but new ones always have trouble, and it causes a traffic jam since it's right in the way of the main employee parking lot. I always wonder how Tug, since he's the only truck driver I know, would do first time in.

Re, " ... post inspired by your concern for the Christians in Iraq (most of whom would disagree with you about matters of faith, I would wager) ..."

Oh, I doubt that. We probably would disagree on matters of doctrine, and on matters of practice -- and on other matters that don't matter. But probably not on matters on faith.

Totally off subject - when I was driving, I made a few deliveries to a small paper warehouse in Omaha. It was at the bottom of a steep hill, and you had to go to the end of the dead-end street where another warehouse sat, enter their lot, turn around, head back up the street, then block traffic both ways as you back in - because the dock was right next to the employee parking lot. One driver from another company tried a tight turn once and took out a couple cars.

Once you got in position, it was easy as pie, although if you were coming downhill and a four-wheeler (non-truck driver) were coming up hill, he had to back down the hill. Not quite one way, but with a full sized rig, it was practically the same thing.

That was one run I enjoyed. I only got to do it because the regular driver took a week off to finish buying a house and start moving. If such a dedicated run had been open, I might still be on the road. Alas, and alack, it wasn't, so I am where I am.

I wondered how long it would take you to figger it out, ER.

I decided when I saw the comment you left at Pastor Timothy's place, that since you seemed to like trolls so much, then I would give you one.

Had you been involved in the conversation all day, you would have known sooner.

I still think about you as well, my friend.

I wish that you were not so consumed with hatred for the President, and hell-bent (pardon the pun...) on re-inventing Christianity that we can't get along anymore.

And I will admit that I am pretty well set in my ways, and am a little hard-headed, but that's just because I am usually right.

This has been fun, but since my cover has been blown, I guess the joke is over.

See ya 'round...

Oh, and about backing into the dock...

The trailer that I pull every day right now is a '30 aluminum dump.

At this point, I could probably take a 53 footer and blind-side it around a 90 degree corner with phone poles on both sides into an alley, and back it inside a doghouse without touching either side of the door. ;-)

Dude, I don't hate the president. I hate his presidency. And now I hate Pelosi's speakership, too.

She needs to step down, so the House can put somebody in charge with the moral authority to lead the impeachment of the president.

And, if I were the only person in the world thinking the things I think about how to keep our shared faith tradition relevant in the unrelenting face of modernity, I might rightly be called a heretic. But there are lots and lots and lots of us, as unsettling as you might find that. :-)

And, my hat is off to anybody who can back a trailer. Once when I was about 17, I got a stock trailer jackknifed, the pickup stuck in mud, and another pickup stuck, and indirectly caused the driver's side door of one of 'em to be shattered, all in about 20 minutes. Somebody else just needs to drive if I'm involved in any such undertaking. I'll be glad to get the gate. :-)

It's still hatred, and unseemly coming from someone who claims the level of enlightenment that you do.

As far as the Pelosi thing, good luck with that.

When I was three, my dad built a little trailer out of plywood and lawn mower wheels, and hooked it to my tricycle and taught me how to back it, so that's how long I've been backing trailers.

I got my first CDL in 1992, and have been putting big things in little holes ever since.

Speaking of that, ER, drop by my place if you want to, and scroll down a couple of posts and check out the photos of my brand new baby republican that the Lord sent me.

I'm very proud of him.

Um, it's "erudite" redneck, thank-you-vurra-much, not "enlightened." Never claimed any such thing. And ding-dang it, all "erudite" means is "has read a shitload of books." It don't even mean "smart." Sheesh.

I'll come see yer critter. He's a Repubaby? I reckon you mean his eyes ain't open yet! LOL

No, he's a Democrat right now...

He cries all the time, expects everyone to hand him everything, poops himself and drools.. You know, all the stuff that Democrats do.

The Lord gave him to me so that I can make a Republican out of him.

When he grows up, he'll get it right.

Everyone's a Democrat until they grow up, you know...

Then they change to the Green Party, Tug.

As to Killed in Action's comment:

So, continue with your bitching, if it makes you feel better, but that's about all it will accomplish.

I'd suggest that history tells a different story. Millions of people worldwide have stood in Bush's way on this God-awful Iraq invasion. He has had opposition in an unprecedented manner and in historic numbers.

Our opposition has, no doubt, lightened the blow. We did not stop the invasion, but we have kept the spotlight on his poor policies - reduced the torture, held the most obvious crimes accountable, not stood for a "shock and awe" campaign, not allowed him to go willy nilly off in to Iran or any other "preemptive strike" he might wish to.

In fact, we've managed to pretty much kill off the legitimacy of the notion of a "preemptive strike" - Bush or any other president would have a damned difficult time pulling off another one of those any time soon.

Watch. History will validate the opposition to Bush and he will go down in history, if not as a criminal, at least as one of the worst presidents in US history.

And hating God-awful and piss-poor stupid policy is not a "syndrome," it's common sense.

LOL!!

STOP it Dan... You're KILLING me!

LOLOLOL!!!

Mmm-hm. Blackface used to be funny, too.
