I'm still speechless

Ya know how George W. Bush, seen mostly as a good ol' boy, likeable fella, latest generation of a political dynasty, who people liked to begin with, landed the world's goodwill after 9/11 -- then pissed it away?

Dale Earnhardt Jr., seen mostly as a good ol' boy, likeable fella, latest generation in a racin' dynasty, who people liked to begin with, landed the goodwill of the racin' world when his daddy died racin' -- and it looks like Junior is fixin' to piss it away.

Say it ain't so, Junior.

If you don't get this, don't ask. The ERS are sick over it.

Comments:
Looks like the two best drivers in NASCAR are fixin' to be teammates. What's wrong with that?

I'm jist kiddin', ER. I knows how you'n'yers feel 'bout this schtuff. I've also got other friends -- gawd hepp me -- who live fer NASCAR. You'd be jealous of my buddy Eric, whose basement is complete with nuttin' butt NASCAR, including some driver's hood Eric bought on eBay fer four hunnert bucks.

I jiss don't git it.

Earnhardt Sr. and Hendrick were pals in their early days, and there's a family connection, too, involving one of Junior's grandpas. Which makes the idea just barely tolerable.

From one of the stories:

"Hendrick also has longtime ties to Earnhardt's family. He fielded a car in 1983 for the elder Earnhardt, who drove it to a Busch Series win at Lowe's Motor Speedway. That entry was co-owned by Robert Gee, who is Junior's maternal grandfather."

But Bird told me she was already bracing for one more thing to turn her off of NASCAR, and that this is probably it.

People understimate the disdain, and jealousy, that Earnhardt fans feel toward Jeff G. and Jimmy J. If Junior can pull this off, he will be the undisputed master of racin'.

But right now, I feel like the diehard Repubs do about the immigration bill:

Junior is Bush, and Jeff Gordon is Teddy Kennedy. Kennedy has everything to gain and Bush has everything to lose, politically, with the immigration deal. Gordon and Johnson, et al., have everything to gain by an association with Junior, and Junior has an awful lot to lose, racin'ly, if he doesn't handle this right.

He needs to come right out today and say, "Daddy did whatever it took to win. That's what it's about. I will, too. Y'all need to settle down."

And, whether he means it or not, he needs to say, "Jeff and Jimmy and me'll be team mates in the garage area. Competitors on the race track. Always."

OK. If yer family tree and bidness relationships are so tangled up the newspasper cain't even splain it, you might be a redneck.

Clipped from the Myrtle Beach Whatever:

"There are family ties between Earnhardt Jr. and Hendrick, dating back to the car owner's first forays into stock-car racing. In 1983, the late Dale Earnhardt won the Mello Yello 300 Busch Series race at Lowes Motor Speedway in a No. 15 car co-owned by Hendrick and Robert Gee. Gee is Earnhardt Jr.'s grandfather his daughter, Brenda, was the elder Earnhardt's second wife and is the mother of Earnhardt Jr. and Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, who also is vice president of JR Motorsports and Earnhardt Jr.'s primary business adviser."

Well, Mark Martin crossed over to the dark side of Hendrick this year. And he crossed all the way from BLUE OVAL VILLE!

So I do feel your pain, ER.

I haven't been following today's events closely, but we've all seen this coming.

Joonyah has it good in some respects. He makes more money in a nano-second than most of his fans will ever earn individually. And they don't love their jobs near so much.

But to be the son of Dale, to be a racer, to have lived in the Intimidator's living shadow, to have watched the legend die, and to live in the shadow of the 3's legacy, under his step-mother's corporate roof as she used HIS name and the name of his father to profit -- all the time driving a mediocre car when all he EVER wanted to do is race -- and somehow live up to his daddy's expectations -- well, I say go git that championship, Joonyah.

And the best way to do that these days is to drive a Hendrick machine.

Ya ain't gotta like it to understand Dale Jr's drive to win. It's genetic.

Sincerely, a Mark Martin fan
