'He grows a little garden in the back yard by the fence. He's consumin' what he's growin' nowadays in self defense' ... damn health nazis!

From the Boston Globe

Congress should give the Food and Drug Administration new powers to regulate tobacco products -- including a plan to reduce nicotine levels -- to help slash smoking rates, an Institute of Medicine committee said yesterday. The committee also recommended steep increases in cigarette taxes , prohibitions on marketing to youths, and a nationwide ban on most indoor smoking.

Read all about it.

Dr. ER has said more than once that she quit smoking at the right time, about four years ago, the same day I quit dipping Copenhagen.

The current FDA chief, according to the story, says the FDA shouldn't regulate tobacco, which is inherently unhealthy, because regulation means tacit approval. That makes sense.

Downside to a Dem president: He or she will probably appoint some health freak to the FDA who will be glad to impose such on the country.

The very idea makes me want to pick up a pack of Camel regular, or Lucky Strike, or Chesterfield, or Pall Malls!

First a disclosure: I smoked three packs of cigarettes for a quarter century. I haven't smoked for 20 years. I still want cigarettes. I still consider myself a smoker but one who doesn't smoke.

ER said; "The current FDA chief, according to the story, says the FDA shouldn't regulate tobacco, which is inherently unhealthy, because regulation means tacit approval. That makes sense."

Well we regulate poisons, explosives, barbers, alcohol, drugs, dogs, cats, in fact we regulate damn near everything.
"Tacit approval", no, just means that it is there and it won't go away so we try our best to control it. Try to remember that anything and everything said by any appointed represenative of this administration or any policy endorsed by this administration has an 98% chance of be a baldface lie or a self delusion bought and paid for by corporate greed. If you regulate anything then regulate it all. Pot and hard drugs included.

I am heartend that the smoking rate is down to 20 %, that is a damn fine accomplishment. You see there is a long time concept of the "hard core fifth". One in five people are always against it, will support it no matter what, don't believe it,will believe it at any cost, won't support it, hate it, love it, eat or drink it anyway, etc. etc.. Once you have gotten anything to 80% acceptance, recognition, understanding, etc. you've done just about as good as you can.

Got to be careful of that 20% however. Some times they will claim to be the majority and will take over because they are always "True Believers". (see Russian Revolution)

By the way I smoked unfiltered Camels, until I couldn't breath well anymore and then I reformed and smoked marlboros.

Dr. Lobo: "I smoked three packs of cigarettes for a quarter century."

What'd you do, smoke one cigarette every few months? Twenty in a pack, divided over 25 years ... that's 60 smokes in two and a half decades. Pretty remarkable. :-)

Hey, I have an idea. How about we take all those smokers whining about how their rights are being infringed upon and have them start caring for those old smokers in the hospital who between gasping for air and demanding breathing treatments and Valium for panic attacks caused by not being able to breathe, are whining about how they wished they'd never picked up a cigarette? It would take a load off the nurses and respiratory therapists and I bet we'd see a real reduction in cigarette smoking, as well. Just a thought..
