ER and Ice-T's excellent adventure
Let the countdown begin. Dr. ER said "all (she) wants for Mother's Day" was for me to bring Ice-T to see her. I may rue the day, but me and the critter are takin' off in the wee hours Friday.
Ice-T is a total house cat. Freaks out if I just take him out on the porch. I've taken him on trial runs around town twice this week, and both times he squoze himself up under the truck seat and just meow-meow-meow-meowed.
Tonight, I'm going to get him a brand-new beddy-bye, one that the stepgranddogs haven't dogged up, just for him, and see if he'll sleep in it where he usually sleeps, at my feet on the bed. Then, I'll see if he'll stay put in it in the passenger's seat, after proper bribing with kitty treats.
We'll see.

It'll be good trainin' fer when Bird gits y'all grandkids, and Grammy and Grampy haul the grandkids all over the Midwest.
Besides, if the cat gets too annoying, the carrier can go in the bed of the pickup without much difficulty. :-)

We had a cat once that jumped in the car right before we took off somewhere and went under the seat. We thought we'd just leave him there until we got back since it was just a trip to the store. When we got home we found he'd put his head through a spring in the seat. We just about buttered him up to get him out of there--lol.
My sister roadtripped with her cat from L.A. to Dallas. She put her in her carrier and after awhile opened the door. The cat stayed in, but eventually came out as time passed. I think the carrier being small and familiar is comforting to cats. I know I can't get Twix out of her carrier at the vet's and have NO trouble getting her back in! :)

Hey, put a shirt that you have worn in the carrier. It will ease his nerves, to smell you. He will be more likly to settle down. If you have to you can cover it with something. So the sights don't scare him. I will be waiting to see how you do. Traveling with children is always a challenge. You never know how it will go.

The shirt idea is a good one! And I just bought him a new bed with NO dog smells on it, and some new catnip toys.
And I might take some cardboard and duct tape and fix it where he can't get under the seats.

We traveled from Chicago to Georgia with our oldest cat about four years ago. There were also two adults and three kids in the minivan. We placed her litter box on the floor in the farback seat and the Eldest sat in the back with the cat. Like your other commenters said, we had her in the carrier with the door open. She talked for a while into the trip, but was generally very good for the 12 hour drive.
I've seen recommendations about using a little children's benadryl, but I'm a freak about medicating animals and was too afraid to try it.
Your idea of block the underneath of seats is a good idea, especially since it'll just be you and the cat.

You should have seen Lisa and me traveling from southern VA to northern IL back in 1999, with two cats and a Great Dane in a Ford Escort wagon. We looked like the Clampetts! Ah, memories.
Your cat is slightly better behaved than ours, as ours would much prefer a body part of one of us as a pillow.
Also, I believe all men with class wear beards.

True story: The last time I shaved my beard was on the eve of the Contract on America takeover of Congress. I went to a Halloween contest clean-shaven, with a full three-piece suit, carrying a Wall Street Journal, a toy hatchet and Milton Friedman's book "Free to Choose" -- I went as the scariest thing I could think of: A budget-cutting right-wing congressman. Damn near got in a fistfight with a 60-something-year-old idgit.
Teditor: "Grammy and Grampy haul the grandkids all over ..."
I can see it! "Young'uns, this hyear is where I first pissed on this hyear hat I'm a-wearin', which fell off into the bar ditch, and into the stream, back in '80."
Tweren't in the Midwest. Twas in extreme eastern Oklahoma, somewheres along State Highway 101, as I recall, in Sequoyah County. It's the black hat, the first one I ever bought with my own scratch, a 3X, for $36, in '78.
Damn. I own, and still occasionally wear, a 29-year-old hat.

Well, taking a cat across country is akin to quasi-maddness. What ever you do, don't let him out of the door or window somewhere out in western Kansas. I have these visions of ER out there amongest the half growed sunflowers going "here Kitty-Kitty-Kitty".
And oh yes, be prepared for motion sickness, generally it happens in your lap.

You need to put the harness on him now. So he has time to get used to it. When you are laying around the house. Put the new bed behind you or at the end of the bed where he sleeps.
Happy trails to you and T. Have fun at the game. It has been years since I have been to a major league baseball game. If I recall it was pretty fun. But that may have had to do with the beer, making out in the stands, parking lot,and car. Oh I guess that was to much info.. :-)
