Off to Little Dixie
Dr. ER and I both have work to do tomorrow way back down over into southeastern Oklahoma, a.k.a. Little Dixie -- and allow me to correct Wikipedia again as to why Little Dixie is called Little Dixie.
It is only partly because, as Wikipedia says, Southerners settled what is now southeastern Oklahoma after the Civil War. It is *mostly* because the Choctaws, relocated to Indian Territory in the 1830s, came from Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and environs, the mixed-heritage Indians were Southern in every way that matters, and they held slaves. Nothing to be proud of today. But factual. Hence, "Little Dixie."
Speakin' of political incorrectness, Saturday afternoon I think Dr. ER and I will go watch the Savage Storm (until recently the Savages) of Southeastern (Oklahoma) State University play host to the mighty Redmen of Northeastern (Oklahoma) State University on the gridiron. It oughta be a hoot.
Then, come Saturday night, is the Real Deal, wherein my beloved Oklahoma State Cowboys will take down the Top 10 University of Texas Longhorns. Burnt orange blood will run in the streets of Austin. Bright orange will prevail! I got a few bottles of Oklahoma-made Head Country barbecue sauce bet against a bottle of Texas-made Llano Estacado wine. :-)

In that NSU has the largest American Indian enrollment of any university in the United States and in that SEOSU has the second highest American Indian enrollment of any university, and in that SEOSU was the only public university in the United States offically segregated for American Indians only by the State Constituion of Oklahoma until 1967 (although nobody paid the least bit of attention to the law), and in that NSU was originally founded as the Cherokee School for Girls, I think that they have the priviledge to call themselves any "indian" type mascot name they care to. Therefore it is not politically incorrect to call yerself one ifin you are one. Go Savage Storm and whoop up on those damn Redmen.

Odd, and unexplained, is why the NCAA got on to Southeastern and a score other universities, but conspicuously did *not* get onto Northeastern.
I say it's up to the people most affected to decide: The Indians themselves, and I mean the ones here, or there, or whevever the school is actually located -- not in general.
Because to say there is "an Indian sentiment" on mascots, or any other issue, is an insult to the diversity among the tribes.
What has always pissed me off is outsiders coming in and agitating issues and controversies, whatever the place, whatever the topic.
*That* -- to go off on a tangent -- is why cockfighting is now outlaweed in Oklahoma, not because most Oklahomans suddenly developed scruples about fightin' roosters.
As Charlie Daniels said in another context: "We might do a little fightin' amongst ourselves, but you outside people best leave us alone."
