Spirit of Truman
Hope springs eternal ...
--ER
By George F. Will
Newsweek
Oct. 2, 2006 issue - Republicans regret, or say they do, that there are no more "Truman Democrats" —- Democrats as hardheaded about national security as was the president who formulated the cold-war policy of containment.
That regret must amuse the gangly, soft-spoken 15-term congressman from Truman country —- western Missouri, where they pronounce it "Massouruh." If Democrats capture the House in November, Ike Skelton will become chairman of the Armed Services Committee. The Republicans might wish there were one fewer Truman Democrat.
Read all about it.

Truman, Truman, Truman, was a hard ass, political party first, good-ole-boy, you scratch my back, yellow dog Democrat from the 19th Century. He appointed the highest number of corrupt friends to political patronage since Grant and up untill George W.. He came within a hair's breath of losing the entire Korean pennensula. He dropped the Atomic Bomb on a civilian city rather than a military target to create terror in the population and extract revenge. All of his political populist programs failed miserably in Congress.
OK, he did some good too, but he was no hero.
So I'm sure the Republicans would like to have him back and then they would have a Democrat a lot like George W. in-so-far-as effect goes.
Now the current dude from Missourah looks to be a good bet. I hope he gets a chance to serve on that committee.
