It's 2006, not 1938

First, if the Bush administration doesn't have the sense to just flat-out ignore Iran's Ahmadinejad, can it at least hire somebody with some wit to craft a suitable response?

For example, the "invitation" to debate Bush? Why not send the brightest ninth-grader from Middle America High School, Anywhere, USA? Or at least suggest it - to keep things fair, you know.

Ahmadinejad is a joke. Why not treat him as such?

By Fareed Zakaria

It's 1938, says liberal columnist Richard Cohen, evoking images of Hitler's armies massing in the face of an appeasing West. No, no, says Newt Gingrich, the Third World War has already begun. Neoconservatives, who can be counted on to escalate, argue that we're actually in the thick of the Fourth World War. Historian Bernard Lewis warned a few weeks ago that Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, could be planning to annihilate Israel (and perhaps even the United States) on Aug. 22 because it was a significant day for Muslims.

Can everyone please take a deep breath?

Read the rest of Zakaria's thoughtful column about Iran.

I agree!

The last time I heard an analysis of Israel's nuclear arsenal is was 16 operational bombs. Now that means it is in reality probably 32 or 64 or such and they have the where-with-all to deliver them.
Iran or any other Middle Eastern country that could try to destroy Israel knows that. Iran will be covered in radioactive green glass five foot deep if it start an atomic confrontation with the U.S. or Israel.
Guys we are the 800 lb Gorilla in the world today, and Israel is our 400 lb toady.

Well, given that we have something like 10,000 nukes (as compared to Israel's 100, let's say) I reckon we'd be the 40,000 lb Gorilla, to keep things proportional.

As an aside, I've noticed as an old fatman that the "heavier" you are the weaker the knees. This is of course a reflection on the human body. Whether or not it is applicable to a body politic...well maybe.

Woah, quite astute. May I quote you and expand upon this?

As for any of my bits, sure. Expand? That sounds heavy.
