The Royal Theatre

The Royal Theatre, in Archer City, Texas, was the inspiration for Larry McMurtry's book and the Peter Bogdanovich great film, "The Last Picture Show," and later OK movie, "Texasville."

Had one of these in my home town of 1500 people. It closed abrutly my freshman year in college when the old woman died that ran it. My home town was a mirror image of Archer City, but on the correct side of the Red River.

I don't know of there ever being a picture show in my home town. There was one in the country seat, though, that I sometimes preferred over the new nice ones in the mall over in Fort Smith, Ark. One time, I took a date to the old one after a toad strasngler, and they'd roped off the first six or eight rows because of flooding -- standing water. The show went on!

feast your eyes on the fremont theater, in san luis obispo, ca. (i lived in slo for six years) it's just as beautiful inside. here's an image of the sculpted ceiling, with it's organic curves and subtle lighting. bless the many different owners over the years for refussing to convert this beautiful landmark into some souless multiplex.

Here's a link to my hometown theater, The Poncan. It is absolutely gorgeous and well worth a walk-in tour during any trip to the area. The Poncan Theatre

I wish there were some interior photos on the site. But take a gander at some of the performers who have been on the stage there.

The theater offers free children's movies on Tuesdays through the summer. Isn't that a grand thing to find still going on in a small town? There are also live performances throughout the year.

I miss it so much.

Yes, there was a picture show in your home town. I don't remember the name of the movie, but the cartoon was "Steamboat Willie" staring Mickey Mouse. I was 4 or 5 years old but remember it well. It burned not long after my first and only trip. The location was about where the first libary was just south of the new and improved City Hall located on Main street.

Wow, Brudder, that's good to know. To hear ER talk about it, HE was the only thing worth much ever in your hometown.

:-) Yes, I'm jiss jokin'.

Yeah, he came around to late. He missed out on all the good stuff.

Hey, Teditor, bite me. :-)

Hey, Brudder, :-)
