The case for flag burning

A Realtor hawking her services placed small flags in the yards of every single house in my neighborhood. I like it. My blood is as red as my neck. It's the alleged LEADERSHIP of this country that sucks, not the nation itself.

And I will burn that flag if I want to -- period -- in protest, or to represent the purification and purging of anti-American, anti-liberty laws that I think this country needs.

Read about the Case for Flag Burning, from the Los Angeles Times.

Oh, by the way: God bless the New York Times.

Comments:
You sound like a arm-chair quarterback. Got all the answers, but very clean hands.

What does *that* mean? There is no ANSWER to this because there is no QUESTION. No problem. No issue.

Oh. You mean about fixing the world in general, not just the flag-burning non-issue!

Well, of course, I have all the answers. Duh. ;-)

we don't need no water,
let the futhermucker burn!
burn, futhermucker!
burn!

now, i have no desire to burn the flag. never have. but that doesn't mean i'm going to permit some star-spangled hypocrites to limit my freedom of expression simply because it may offend their pretentious sensibilities.

and i defy anyone to prove to me that the practice somehow undermines the foundation of this country. we've managed pretty well for two and a quarter centuries wthout any such legislation; in fact, we're a greater nation now than ever before, despite the practice.

if this nation isn't strong enough to endure some distasteful acts of expression, then i have to wonder about the stability of our foundation. can this nation survive inconsequential expression, or does that basic right doom this nation and, by default, doom itself?

i'm strong enough to endure a flag burning. how 'bout the rest of you?

oops! meant to add:

but it's all a moot point, as repubs have no real desire to pass this amendment. this is just posturing on their part in preparation for midterm elections, when they'll use the failure of passage to discredit dems. another cheap rovian ploy.

it'll never pass. it's not meant to.

I'll pray for your lost souls if the (R)'s ever come out against taking the mark of the beast. You'd all fight to be first in line just to be against em.

I'm with Kevron on this; he put it so well. And I'll put my NAME on that!

"that doesn't mean i'm going to permit some star-spangled hypocrites to limit my freedom of expression simply because it may offend their pretentious sensibilities."

I'll remind of you of this if prayer is ever allowed back in public school. I'll remind you of this if Roe v Wade is ever overturned. I'll remind you of this next time Democrats are "offended" when their duplicitous dealings are outed... by Republicans.

Hypocrite.

Oh, for the record. Flag burning is akin to standing at the edge and peeing into the pool. Any swimmers in the water would naturally be deeply offended. As would you when the lifeguards tackled you and forcefully threw your sorry butt out.

"I'll remind of you of this if prayer is ever allowed back in public school."

the issue is not one of burning flags in schools, so your analogy fails.

"I'll remind you of this if Roe v Wade is ever overturned."

not even remotely relevant.

"I'll remind you of this next time Democrats are "offended" when their duplicitous dealings are outed... by Republicans."

not only irrelevant, but a wildly inaccurate mischaracterization. well done!

"Hypocrite."

ninny.

"Oh, for the record. Flag burning is akin to standing at the edge and peeing into the pool. Any swimmers in the water would naturally be deeply offended."

"for the record", eh? that trumps me! oh, wait! no it doesn't!

yer wrong.

please, drop the analogies, as they offend me. don't make me have to pass an amendment....

"As would you when the lifeguards tackled you and forcefully threw your sorry butt out."

don't threaten me with a good time!

KEvron

"....the issue is not one of burning flags in schools, so your analogy fails."

and for the record, i'm against the burning of flags in public schools. safety hazard, that....

KEvron

"I'll pray for your lost souls if the (R)'s ever come out against taking the mark of the beast."

either this is some deeply troubling rhetoric, entirely antithetical to the idea of democracy, or it's some devilishly clever satire. hard to tell, really. but should it be the former, i'll mark it down as a "not strong enough"....

I thought I inject a little venom in ELAshley, but, at the moment, it just seems too pointless.

You see, ER, you're wrong. the flag-burning amendment thing is a vote-getter, not a vote-loser, precisely because of the indifference and stupidity of your fellow citizens, who are, after all, the country. It's true the leaders rake off additional juice in various ways as a typical agency cost, but the proposed amendment isn't them paying themselves - it's their version of a sop. If you didn't have people chowing down on leftover sops, it wouldn't work. When I think of the times when liberty has actually advanced, it hasn't been because of those tools - but then the whole idea of being led by the nose to freedom is an ultimately self-consuming irony and just makes me really tired.

Did i grab the wrong bottle of pills today?

Oh, I know it's a vote-getter. And that's the shame of it: ELashley, for example, I know is no dummy -- yet he appears to be one of the danged sheep that the Rhetorical Right Wing continues to lead to slaughter. (No offense, EL.)

Okay, this exchange was plain hilarious:

"Hypocrite."

ninny.

Had to mention that first off because I loves me some KEVronius. Second, what is the *deal* with anonymouses writing something like "ER you're a liberal pinko commie satanist" or somesuch? The last several posts have been plumb full o' riff raff.

If I was going to post to YOUR blog and essentially call you evil, unAmerican, cowardly, etc., etc, then you can bet I'd at least work up the gonadal fortitude to sign the post.

As it is, I pretty much agree with you so I forgo the fortitude for insipid comments like this one.

Howdy, B.

I like to think it's because I'm so sweet. Sweet stuff *always* attracts the blowflies!

News Flash
Democrats Believe in God.
Say he is on their side and will help them win in 06 & 08
See CNN for futher details.

That's not news.

What will be news is when people start to realize that the Repubs' claim that the GOP being "God's Own Party" is ludicrous on its face.

Faith is above partisanship. ... or is it that politics is below faith ...

"Democrats Believe in God."

it's only news that the wingnuts are finally owning up to the fact.

"Say he is on their side and will help them win in 06 & 08"

i rather doubt the veracity of that statement. traditionally, arse-sourcing is not accepted by the forum.

KEvron

GOP = God's Own Party

???

That's a new one on me. I don't think God cares too much for either Party... Or ANY party, for that matter.

No offense taken ER. But I do find it curious that we both see each other in the same light.... as sheep. :)

"That's a new one on me."

KEvron

LOL, Elash. You know what that means? We ARE sheep, in different parts of the flock -- and the Lord is our shepherd!

Would that people like D.Daddio could accept the fact that we can disagree on politics, and Scripture, and doctrine -- and both still be Christians.

Jesus is the reason for the reason.

How then shall we dispose of our flag properly?
From the U.S. Flag site.

"When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner."

http://www.usa-flag-site.org/etiquette.shtml

Dignity is a matter of taste.
Taste has no business in a Constitution.
