Clarification: Lesbian Brains story
Eds: Members who used BC-Lesbian Brains of May 8 may wish to use
the following, which clarifies a section of the story dealing with
individuals perception of pheromones.
WASHINGTON (AP) - In a story May 8, The Associated Press
reported on the perceptions of lesbian women and heterosexual men
and women when sniffing chemicals derived from human hormones. That
report was based on a chart in a research study which indicated
different perceptions of the chemicals, such as pleasantness,
familiarity and irritability.
While there were differences in how the brains of homosexual and
heterosexual participants reacted to the chemicals, the story
should also have included the conclusion that indicated differences
in individual perceptions were not statistically significant.
Kind of, um, anticlimactic.

Even so, the retraction doesn't give enough info to make sense itself. No significant difference "between" individuals?
Wouldn't you have to analyse between groups, not individuals?
Is this saying more about pherimones than sexuality?
If so how does this affect last years study?

The clarification addresses the journalistic reporting, not the research or scientific article.

Saw another article on the story itself. Apparently, the study was flawed too. Didn't clearly define the pheromones as chemical equivalents, which can make them not the same as the naturally produced pheromones.
Maybe the real thing to root out is who pays for all these studies that seem to prove nothing, and how much?
