'I Love Rock 'n' Roll'

Cool music meme, as seen at Trixies's and Tech's.

1. Go to www.musicoutfitters.com.

2. Enter the year you graduated from high school in the search function and get the list of 100 most popular songs of that year.

3. Bold the songs you like, strike through the ones you hate and underline your favorite. (Do nothing to the ones you don’t remember or don’t care about. A bit of coding help: Use <> and < /s > to strike through a line; just remove the spaces between the brackets. Use <> and < /u > to underline; once again remove the spaces between the brackets.)

Oh, man! I do loves me some Amy Grant! I met once when I was a Gospel radio announcer in Arkansas, in late '82 or '83.

And R.E.M's "Shiny Happy People" is a fave of mine.

--ER

Oh, I do wish they had the top 100 country, too. I've always gone "both ways" musically. ;-)

--ER

Youngbloods. Yep, although I can't remember their big hit. They were on the playlist, as olides, at another radio station I worked at in the '80s.

--ER

"Get Together" is the Youngbloods song I was thinking about.

--ER

Dang, Rem, you graduated high school in 1991??? From here on out I'll just argue with you by pointing out that you should respect the wisdom of your elders ;)

Here's my list, according to the Village Voice top singles from 1986:

Run-D.M.C. "Walk This Way"
Cameo "Word Up"
Prince and the Revolution "Kiss/Love or Money"
Peter Gabriel "Sledgehammer"
Billy Bragg "Levi Stubbs' Tears"
R.E.M. "Fall On Me"

Timbuk 3 "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" (yuck)
Stevie Winwood "Higher Love"
Public Image Ltd. "Rise"
Talking Heads "Wild Wild Life"
Janet Jackson "Nasty"
Beastie Boys "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)"
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band "War/Merry Christmas Baby"
The Smithereens "Blood and Roses/Behind the Wall of Sleep"
Pretenders "Don't Get Me Wrong"
Bangles "Walk Like an Egyptian"

Ciccone Youth "Into the Groovey/Burnin Up/Tuff Titty Rap"
Pet Shop Boys "West End Girls"
Timex Social Club "Rumors/Vicious Rumors"
James Brown "Living in America"
Madonna "Papa Don't Preach"
(you know I like this song)
Robert Palmer "Addicted to Love"
Bangles "Manic Monday"
Bruce Hornsby and the Range "The Way It Is"

Rolling Stones "One Hit (To The Body)"

Gads, ER, you're...you're...just a BABY! :D

Of all the songs from MY senior, year, I've have to say that my favorite is "The No No Song" by Ringo Starr. Which is funny, because I'm a teetotaler, never smoked anything, and never tried any of the other stuff!

Wah, wah, wah you're all babies! By the time most of these songs came out I was on my third career! Snit I feel old.

LOL. I LOVE the No-No Song.

I got a good dose of '60s-'70s influence. Brother ER is a 1970 grad. Little ER ran around the house singin' Beatles tunes picked up from Brother ER, and Hank Williams, Charlie Pride and Roger Miller stuff picked up from Mama ER! :-)

--ER

Oh, ER, Kool and the Gang? tsk tsk... LOL!

Mark, you are SO not giving ER a hard time over Kool and the Gang (although granted, "Get Down On It" is not one of their better tunes) when he's admitted to liking that godawful "Physical," "Eye of the Tiger," the completely insipid "Ebony and Ivory" (what was Stevie Wonder thinking?!?), and Huey Lewis and the News, who couldn't rock if you handed them a stone. Not to mention Journey, Air Supply, and Foreigner .... ;)

Poor ER. looks like 1982 wasn't such a great year for pop music :(

For me, Eye of the Tiger is inexorably linked to Rocky Balboa. I can't think of one without the other. I've got ER's back on that one. He's on his own with Olivia Newton John and Stevie Wonder. But then, I did highlight a Paula Abdul song - I guess I'm revealing my 'softer' side.

Still, I'd take either the '82 or the '86 playlist over my '91 list. Trixie's '73 list wasn't too bad either.

What I've learned today is this: If we all meet at ER's for Thanksgiving, it looks like I have to sit at the virtual kids' table.

Can't decide whether this is more funny or frightening, but there's one song on both the list from my graduation year and the list from my birth year: Elton John's Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me.

Oh, and Rem--I'd be joining you at the kid's table, having graduated in 1992.

Rem, your list isn't half bad! Heavy on throwaway dance tunes, true; but not only is that fantastic summer ditty by DJ Jazzy Jeff and good ol' Will Smith on there, you've also got Luther Vandross, LL Cool J (c'mon, you don't like "Around the Way Girl"???), UB40, Prince, Chris Issak, and the always delightful Salt-n-Papa. Not to mention the equally delightful Dee-Lite. What could you possibly have against Dee-Lite?

B. Three words:

Make. Out. Music.

;-)

Oh GREAT. Looks like I'll be the one cooking the turkey while listening to Beethoven. Quit throwing the sweet potatoes at each other!

Howerver, note that I marked through "Abacadabra."

I remember that the line "Black panties with an angel's face" TOTALLY offended by rural Baptist-youth-group sensibilities. I really was a good kid ... :-)

The Press: You mean Air Supply, etc? No one's copping a feel while my skin is crawling, my friend...

B, that's what the girls thought was make-out music. I was just more than glad to cater to their tastes. :-)

Man, I'm terrified to consider what was even on the charts in 1989. I'm disqualifying myself though, having never graduated from high school.
The thing I really like about this meme is not only that I'm reminded of forgotten moments of glory by pop stars who history has ignored, but also that the way that the lists themselves have printed: that artist/song separated-by-comma thing makes for funny sentences.
I can't remember any of the truly hilarious offenders here, but it seems to me that one of them went like "America loves you, Keith Sweat", or something along those lines.
Mind you, I started laughing at anyone calling themselves 'Keith Sweat'.
