To hell with Pat Robertson
Pat Robertson is the one who needs shot. The self-important windbag did more damage with this than most of this country's enemies could do. He needs to be censured and his tax-exempt status revoked.
And pilloried, and tarred and feathered and run out on a a rail. And his ass kicked.
Brother in Christ? If so, the Lord needs to bring him home.

I never liked Pat. I think he's got a mean streak the size of Jordan. There are plenty of religious people who support the law of the Bible without ever understanding its mercy.
I'm not sure ANT church -- or pseudo-church -- should be tax-exempt.
The ones that actually do something for the needs of people in their communities, maybe they should get a tax break for that.
But why should a church be tax exempt otherwise?

I await Nick's 2 cents.
In the meantime, here's another rant on the same topic:

For the same reasons that newspapers and other publications aren't taxed, E.R. If you think about it, you know the answers to that. No taxation on thoughts and ideas, whether they be secular or not.
And I agree, I'll put on my pointy shoes and take my turn in line kicking Robertson's ass. But you KNOW that he has made outrageous statements for as long as he's had a forum for doing so. At last glance at the USAToday poll, 62 percent of those who voted said the U.S. should stay out of the internal affairs of other countries -- only 12 percent said Robertson had the right to suggest assassination.
I am more outraged by Robertson's other positions, such as this one:
Robertson has made controversial statements in the past. In October 2003, he suggested that the State Department be blown up with a nuclear device. He has also said that feminism encourages women to "kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."
Uh, Pat... just in case there's any question: I believe in equal rights for women. Give me my equal pay! I've never killed any children, never practiced witchcraft, never have been a lesbian and don't intend to be one, but by golly, I am a capitalist and I WANT MY MONEY.

What do you mean newspapers aren't taxed?? Maybe newspaper buyers, at the grocery store or newstand, aren't taxed. But that's a different thing. I'm pretty sure newspapers pay property taxes.
And churches don't.
??

And his very worst-lest we forget, was on 9/11 when he said that we were receiving our just punishment for being a bunch of secular humanists. Why the hell does he have a job anymore? Anyone else who suggested that there was a certain inevitability to the events of that day certainly lost jobs.
I was waiting, by the way, for an actual rationale for the invasion of Venezuela, by the way. Duck.

Essentially it can be distilled to this:
Government may not impose a tax directly upon the exercise of a constitutional right itself.

I'm just astounded that the communist boogeyman is still alive, at least in some quarters.

More astounding is that the commie boogeyman is now in cahoots with the Muslim boogeyman!
Trix, thanks for that link. Newspapers do pay property taxes, though.

Check the county assessor's records. I think you'll find it interesting.

It's that last thing. Definitely.
The merits of political assassination, in theory, are one thing. I'm sure someonbe would've picked off Hitler, given the chance, and I'd be floored, despite Rumsfeld's protestations today, if there isn't a standing order, spoken or not, to blow Osama's heads off his shoulders if the opportunity presents itself.
As for Chavez himself, I think I probably have a soft spot for him. Democratically elected lefty? Someone not only with the cajones, but the people behind him, to act as rhetorical ballast to the excesses of this country right now IN this hemisphere? Leave Venezuela alone. They'll help keep us honest.
And I buy Citgo gas at every opportunity, too.
But Christian leaders can't say what Pat Robertson said -- ever. Wow.
And now I see the veep of Venezuela is accusing us of hypocrisy for letting a "terrorist" like him spout off like that. And I don't know what the defense is. 'Cause he for damn sure shouted "Fire!" in a crowded theater.

He should be called The Not Right Not Reverend Robertson. Sheesh.
Here's an interesting article from the 700 Club Web site. This looks to be from CBN. "Unfair and Unbalanced for Jesus. ... We report. We decide. You cringe." (Sorry, I have a history of dislike for "Christian news.")

Wow! On the 700 Club site is a discussion form topic: "Does Racism Still Exist?"
Man, this is as good as The Onion.
BTW, I try very hard not to make light of, or make fun of, everyday Christian believers, no matter how uninformed, misguided or hide-bound they are. I think to do so is to take steps that, arguably, could cause a brother to stumble.
But Pat Robertson is no everyday Christian -- and if attacking him for his meanness and stupidity causes some other brother to stumble, well, maybe he needs to stumble, if he's braced himself, or his faith, agains this nincompoop!

You are all a bunch of panty-waisted pinko's. Pat Roberston can say, or do, what he damn well pleases. I'm sure he's not staying up late worrying about what a group like you thinks about him. At least he can call a spade a spade. That commie-pig down south needs a bullet between the eyes. If we'd done that to Castro back in the late 50's think of all the blood and money that would have been saved over the last 40-odd years. God bless Pat Robertson, God bless the USA!!!!!
That IS noteworthy.
Note that Jesus His Self was probably a panty-waist by Anon's definition.
What he falied to see was I didn't dismiss assassination outright. It just ain't fittin' for a supposed man of God to call for it. No way, no how.
For Robertson to do so shows pure-dee lack of sense, I think.

Pat has more sense in his little finger than you do in your entire body. He IS a man of GOD. The commie he wants to kill is anti-God and anit-American, and therefore must be stopped at all cost. We must punish those who wish us harm.
So then why does Robertson, and you, friend Anon, sound so much like men of Allah?
Robertson wants to step down from his alleged Christian alleged pulpit, and call for such, I'll get off his butt.
Maybe he does have political sense. But how is calling for assassination a "Christian" thing to do?

OK, I gotta say this: In the interest of Christian "news," Pat Robertson had no right to make such a comment. Such a comment is ignorant, whether it be Christian news or any other broadcast presenting news. Calling for someone's death, no matter the case, is not just an opinion piece.
Robertson's comments show's he sees himself more a political power and less a man of God.
Of course, Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan consider themselves people of God, so I guess Robertson's in fine company. Question is, which of those similar groups does Anon belong?

Excellent question, Teditor. In my book, backing an assassination anywhere is neither Christian nor American, no matter how expedient it may be to ... whatever your cause is.
I don't like Pat Robertson, never have. You cannot watch his show for more than 5 minutes without him turning the commentary to his favorite subject. Money.
I would call him an idiot, but I don't want to lower myself to that level. Let's just say he doesn't seem to have the credentials of a sincere Bible believing Christian.

Ole Patty, Never been a fan of his either.
I would say if a church, church leader, or the like is publically poltican for a specific canidate then their tax exemption should be pulled.
However, crazy as some may think his words are, he is entitled to say anything he so pleases minster or not. However, using the pulpit to do so may be a cause of a conflict of interest. But just because he's a "minister" should not give him less rights to say what he wants. Now is it appropriate for a "follower of Christ" to advocate such? That is between him and his God.
What i find amusing is the people who are upset the most are only half as excited when Said from some Islamic country says he wishes GWBush had a bullet between his eyes. (or even a quarter as excited when some American playwright portrays the killing of GWB).

OK, my tax-exempt rant was a bit much. But I still wonder whether ANY church or church-related organization should be tax-exempt.
I didn't know any fiction writer had depicted Dubya as bein' killed. Damn him, if so.
And, it's not the same when an ayatollah or some other nutjob calls for the head of our president. They're nutjobs, and they''re the enemy.
The Not So Right Not So Reverend Robertson is supposed to be on the side of Truth and Justice, and is supposed to be above such public murderous impulses -- not because he's an American but because he's a supposed preacher of the Gospel!

But aren't the ayatollas, from their prespective, on the side of Truth and Justice because they are preachers of Islam?
But your point is well taken. In general Christianity is a religion against violence. And their leaders are suppose to uphold those principles. In Islam...it could be debated if it is a religion "of peace". Course we got the Crusades also.
Good post.
Thanks Nick for your comments. insightful and balanced.

I have never seen Fred Phelps depicted anywhere as anything other than the lunatic he is. Except on his own Web sites. ... Makes me itch just thinkin' about him.
Now, the Rev. Gene Scott -- I do miss him. :-)

Well, I haven't seen the flick, but have been led to believe it was produced by the lunatic left butt-pirate fringe itself, and so I would interpret any such judgment on their part thusly.

LET HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE-
WE ALL HAVE SAID THINGS THAT WE WISH WE COULD TAKE BACK, OR THAT WE WISH WE HADNT SAID IN THAT "WAY" BUT THE TRUTH IS NO BODY IS PERFECT... HOW COME BILL CLINTON CAN DO THE THINGS HE DOES AND SAY THE THINGS HE DID AND YET NO ONE PERSECUTES HIM? BECAUSE HE WASNT A "MAN OF GOD" IN OFFICIAL POLITICS? BULL HONKEY. LEAVE THE MAN ALONE. WE ALL HAVE TO ANSWER TO GOD IN THE END.... SO EVERYTHING THAT IS DONE AND SAID BY A "REDNECK" IS OK?

If you think Clinton was not, and is not, persecuted every time he opens his mouth on the national stage, well, you need to pay closer attention.
