DOD: We can't handle the truth
Raze the prison. Burn the remains. Pour salt on the ground. Prosecute every person involved to the fullest extent of the most punitive law.
The bastards make is SO hard to wave the flag.
Thanks to B. for the heads-up.

So what is shown on the 87 photographs and four videos from Abu Ghraib prison that the Pentagon, in an eleventh hour move, blocked from release this weekend? One clue: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last year, after viewing a large cache of unreleased images: "I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe.” They show acts "that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," he added.
Read all about it.

Sickening. I hope all those who were saying this was "a little nothing" will understand now how horrible this place is.
And I suppose that those involved had direct orders straight from President Bush (or at least Karl Rove) specifically telling them which atrocities to commit.
Did they take out big knives and saw off anyone's head? If so I would love to see the videotape...
AMERICA IS NOT THE ENEMY HERE!!
The soldiers involved in Abu Graib have been or are being tried and punnished.
Can you guys PLEASE try to get with the program?

Look, Tugboat. One of the American civilians who was beheaded, Jack Hensley, was a high school classmate of mine. So yes, I understand that we have enemies. But I do not want our country turning into people who are like the enemy. I expect better of Americans.
Tug, dude. Yer mixing up your spasms. Nobody said any such thing.
But I dare say that in this case, the evil monsters who did this, allowed this and ignored this WERE OUR ENEMIES and deserve to be treated as such. This makes me sick -- and anybody who tries to dismiss it or detract from it is absolutely beneath my contempt.
The fact is, some things are worse than being killed, to some people. And these bastards systematically took advantage of that fact. And for what? This doesn't look like any organized attempt to get information. This was evil run amok. Damn them. Damn them for bringing shame on the war effort, for bringing shame on America -- damn them all to hell.

I would have to agree that we are much better than this. There were some not so bright people guarding the prisoners at Abu Ghraib, to be sure, and if they haven't been punished yet, than let them be punished. But let's not assume because there are some who break the rules and don't do the right thing, that all the military is that way. Remember those few that participated in the crimes at Abu Ghraib are a very small minority.
I don't recall that anyone said the entire military was the problem. But fish stinks from the head down. Those things were not done without SOME chain of command knowing about it.
What has appalled me is the willingness of people I know to accept the wrongdoing -- and LAUGH about it. Like it's some giant frat boy joke.
It wasn't funny when Jack was killed, and it's not funny when our people behave badly.
An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind, and it's not the right thing to do.

I think I'm to the point where Rumselfeld need to quit taking the president's "no" for an answer. Rumselfe volunteered to resign, and the president would not hear of it. Rumsfled, being the only damn grown-up in the place, should walk away and shake the dist from his boots.
The damage is done to the military's reputation!
The Onion --- www.theonion.com -- from last week's issue:
Marine Corps Shortens Slogan To 'The Few'
WASHINGTON, DC—In light of recruiting shortfalls, a near standstill in re-enlistment, and rock-bottom troop morale, U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Michael Hagee announced Monday that the Marines will alter their unofficial slogan, abbreviating it to the more accurate "The Few." Hagee said, "We are still the Marines, the premier combat arm of the U.S. military." The Marines will also change their motto to Semper Fidelis, Sic Non Sapienti, or "Always Faithful, But This Is Just Ridiculous."

Manl I really need to start self-editing my comments. But those Rumsfeld typos are pretty profound if you think about it.
Mark, the military itself--at least the good guys in it, which is most of 'em--objected to the DOJ policies that allowed torture, precisely because they know that torturing people during times of war can come back and bite you--or rather them--in the ass. The fact is, what happened at Abu Ghraib (and Gitmo) *was* policy. Saying that doesn't indict the military; it indicts the administration.
