50 Election Days
I'd planned to write my own essay on the need for the Electoral College, but have run out of energy on the subject. Let's just vote and get it behind us!
Go here to read a good essay on why election by the Electoral College, not by popular vote, is the best for the republic:

John Samples, director of the Center for Representative Government at the Cato Institute, wrote it in November, 2000. It deserves to be dusted off on the eve of Election Day 2004.
Or click on "50 Election Days" above.
And, for an explanation of the Founding Fathers' reasons for creating the Electoral College in the first place, and how it works, go here:

Thanks for posting these links. I'll have to come back and read them, as I'm not really supposed to be online even right now. I have a few things I'm supposed to be doing to get ready for a full day tomorrow.
Shhh, don't tell that I snuck online! ;)
